Plan how many smaller sheets are needed to assemble an oversized drawing at its intended physical size.
What this calculator solves
Use tiling when the required plan footprint is larger than the available cut-sheet device and a temporary review, markup or site copy is acceptable. The calculator compares normal and rotated sheet orientations and returns the lower page count.
It is not an imposition yield tool: the large image is divided across sheets, rather than repeating multiple finished pieces on one press sheet.
How to choose the inputs
Measure or obtain the device's printable width and height after margins. A nominal 210 × 297 mm A4 sheet may offer less usable area. Each additional column advances by printable width minus overlap; rows advance by printable height minus overlap.
Overlap must be smaller than both printable dimensions. Include registration marks, tile labels and a page map in the source or RIP so the counted pages can be assembled in the intended order.
How the calculation works
The first tile contributes its full printable dimension. Each following tile advances by printable dimension minus overlap. Columns and rows round up separately so a partial edge still consumes a whole page.
The calculator repeats the count with sheet width and height swapped and selects the lower total while reporting both grids.
Worked production example
An 841 × 594 mm A1 plan printed through a 190 × 277 mm usable A4 area with 10 mm overlap needs 5 columns × 3 rows, or 15 sheets, in the best orientation. Rotating the sheets may change the grid, so the calculator reports both arrangements.
The job ticket should carry finished plan size, usable sheet size, overlap, orientation, grid and page total. Print one corner pair first to confirm marks and overlap before running the whole set.
How to interpret the result
The bold result is the minimum whole-page grid under the entered geometry. Outer coverage may exceed the plan and can be trimmed. Use rows and columns for page labels, but also consider seam locations before accepting the lowest count.
Common production mistakes
Entering nominal paper size overstates coverage and can clip edge labels. Zero overlap leaves no shared image for alignment, while very large overlap increases page count and trimming. Automatic “Fit” can also reduce each tile independently and break the assembled scale.
Do not mix tile orientation or printer presets within one set. Trim the same designated edges, align against a stable table and verify a dimension across a tile seam.

Production assumptions and limitations
The formula assumes a rectangular plan and equal shared overlap between every adjacent page. It does not add bleed or account for irregular content-aware splits. For issued construction or fabrication sets, a single-sheet calibrated plot is usually safer than an assembled mosaic.
