What this calculator solves

This tool answers whether a drawing can remain at the requested ratio on an available cut sheet or roll width. It calculates geometry before the operator reaches the driver, where automatic fit options can hide a scale change.

Choose the paper family actually stocked by the reprographics room. ISO A, ANSI and ARCH names are not interchangeable even when two sheets appear similar.

How to choose the inputs

Enter the real-world width and height represented by the plotted extents in metres, plus the target ratio denominator. Printed millimetres equal real metres × 1,000 ÷ denominator. The margin is added on all four edges after scaling.

The result checks both sheet orientations against nominal standard dimensions. It does not subtract a plotter's unprintable area automatically; the entered clear margin must cover that device-specific constraint.

How the calculation works

The planner converts both real extents to millimetres, divides by the target denominator and adds twice the edge margin to each axis. It checks paper sizes in ascending order and accepts the first whose width and height fit in either orientation.

The first match is the smallest nominal standard sheet, not automatically the cheapest or easiest production route.

Worked production example

A 24 m × 15 m plan at 1:50 produces a 480 × 300 mm drawing footprint. With 10 mm clear space on each edge it needs 500 × 320 mm. In the ISO family, A2 (420 × 594 mm) fits in landscape; A3 does not.

The production ticket should state “A2 landscape / 1:50 / 480 × 300 mm plotted footprint / 10 mm clear edge,” not merely “print on A2.”

How to interpret the result

The result names the sheet and orientation, followed by drawing and margin-inclusive dimensions. If no listed sheet fits, choose a documented smaller ratio, a custom roll length or tiling instead of allowing the driver to resize silently.

Common production mistakes

Do not treat the real building envelope as the whole page when legends, revision clouds or title blocks extend farther. Do not assume nominal sheet dimensions equal the device's printable area or that roll width can be used edge to edge.

A fit result only establishes geometric possibility. Grain, fold sequence, field-set handling and available roll widths can make the next larger size operationally better.

Production assumptions and limitations

The drawing is assumed to use a uniform ratio and rectangular extents. The tool does not interpret CAD layouts, PDF boxes or mixed-scale details. If no listed sheet fits, choose a smaller scale, custom roll length or tile the plan.
